Operating our businesses in an environmentally responsible manner is an important part of our management approach. We believe that our business must manage land, water and ecosystems in a way that promotes sustainability.

We believe in achieving more than just compliance and in order to meet this target we will:

  • comply with all applicable laws and regulations while aspiring to higher standards
  • work closely with government agencies and local communities to learn and understand the environmental risks in the areas in which we operate
  • establish environmental management systems and implement programs that identify, assess and manage environmental risk
  • set and regularly review environmental objectives and targets
  • measure our performance through audits.

Each year we continue our progress towards reaching environmental objectives and report in-line with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. We identify and report against what we assess as being the material sustainability issues for our business. It is through continued engagement with our stakeholders that we can determine what is most important to them and the business, and report on the progress being made in these areas.

We are committed to operating in a sustainable manner and we take our environmental and social responsibilities seriously.

As a large energy user it is imperative that we adopt new technologies that will help reduce our energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2015, Curragh replaced 28 metal halide lighting units with 21 LED units resulting in a reduction in fuel usage by approximately 700,000 litres per year along with a reduction of approximately 2,000 tonnes of CO2e.

The management and use of water is an important part of our operations at Curragh mine and material to a number of our stakeholders. In 2015 our use of municipal water was reduced by around 13 per cent.
