Bengalla is an open cut coal mine, using a dragline truck and shovel method. The mine produces steaming coal for export markets and has a 10.7 million tonnes per annum run-of-mine capacity (100 per cent).

Bengalla’s steaming coal is used for power generation and exported primarily to customers based in Japan and North Asia.

The mine’s history as a project dates back to 1990, when the NSW Government called for expressions of interest from mining companies to develop a coal resource. Development Consent was granted for Bengalla in 1996 and the site commenced production in 1999.
