Premier Coal was announced as the winner of the 2009 WA Environment Awards Corporate Business Leading by Example Category at an award ceremony in Perth on 27 November.
This award from the WA Government recognises the high standard of work that is achieved by Premier Coal and the extensive work undertaken with the Government, the community in which we live and our industry.
The Premier Coal submission was based on the development of the innovative Aquaculture Project with the local Ngalang Boodja.
The Aquaculture Project was developed from an innovative research initiative with Curtin University to address long term issues with old mine voids or lakes. There were a number of excellent submissions and Premier Coal was one of three finalists.
Patrick Warrand, General Manager Premier Coal was thrilled that the Aquaculture Project won this award after the many years of work by so many individuals. “This rehabilitation project is leading edge and to my knowledge not trialed anywhere else where we are trying to establish a long term sustainable business around an old mine void that will enhance the environment.”
“The award is due recognition for all those involved, in particular the support of the WA Government through the Coal Future Fund and Royalties for Regions, the local Aborigines and Wesfarmers. Ensuring the future of the coal industry is not just about today but also tomorrow.”
Premier Coal thanks all those who have been involved in the project including Mick Murray MLA, the Coal Futures Fund, Royalties for Regions Programme, Peter McGinty of Blue Ridge Marron Farm in Manjimup, Louis Evans, the Aquaculture Council of WA, all the employees at the mine and in particular the Ngalang Boodja community of Collie.
Without the support of these groups and individuals we would never have reached this stage.
